Meet the Staff
Laurie “LJ” Johnston has been the Executive Director of Camp Carter for nine years. She has a degree in Recreation Management from UNT and is a member and past section president of the American Camp Association. LJ decided to be a camp director at the age of sixteen and has gone to camp every summer, except one, since age seven. She has a passion for children and camp and truly believes the world would be a better place if everyone got to go to camp at least once in their lifetime! Her claim to fame is that she was the Houston High School Archery champ (but won’t tell you the year!). She is the owner of “Big Sam,” the resident black lab in the summer.
Donna Stanton has been the Business Manager for Camp Carter since 2000. She takes care of all finance, payroll, scholarships and oversees registration. She was born and raised in the Fort Worth area. As a child, Donna went to Girl Scout camp. She has also worked for Camp Fire and a local hospital in administrative support. She is married to her wonderful husband James, the proud mother of an eighteen year old boy, Danny, currently going to college to be a computer engineer, and a fifteen year old girl, Samantha, who has grown up at Camp Carter and hopes to work there this summer. Her passion is her children, the Azle MGP and music.
David Hagel, Retreat Coordinator and Camp Can-Do Director, came to Camp Carter for the first time in January of 2008. Originally from St. Louis Park, Minnesota, David attended St. Paul College where he majored in Watch Making and Repair. This is David’s twelfth year working for the YMCA and is currently working at his fourth YMCA camp. David enjoys playing his guitar, shooting hoops and does one hilarious Pillsbury dough boy impersonation!
Karen Roseborough is the new Equestrian Director for Camp Carter. She is Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) level two certified in Western and Trail and was previously an instructor at our Equestrian Center. She has been a horse owner and lover for twenty years and currently owns five horses. Karen is also a Girl Scout Leader and enjoys camping, archery and most outdoor activities. Karen’s biggest fear is swimming in the ocean because “there are things in it that can eat me!"
Lynn Campbell has worked for Camp Carter for three years as the Dining Hall Coordinator. She oversees two kitchens in the Dining Hall and the Retreat Center. Lynn believes that Camp Carter is a great place to work and even greater place to send your children. She has been married twenty six years to a wonderful man named Kevin. They live so close it's like they live on camp. They have two great children named Melissa and Daniel, one daughter in-law they claim as their own, and two awesome grandbabies whose names are Jacob, age four, and Conner who is eighteen months old. They are very proud of their family and their two grandbabies are their pride and joy.
Rachel Carrigan Drury has been with Camp Carter for 6 years. She has served as the Program Director over Outdoor Education and Day Camp for the past 5 years. She has a degree in Environmental Science from Texas Christian University. Rachel recently married her amazing husband, Chris in a beautiful ceremony at Camp Carter’s Outdoor Chapel. At the reception, in true camp fashion, they surprised all their family and friends with a choreographed dance to Peter Cetera’s Glory of Love. In her free time, Rachel enjoys reading, knitting, camping, hiking, spending time with her pets Daisy and Andy, and learning to mountain bike with her husband.
